  • Honest information so you can make decisions with confidence

Common questions

Questions Jacksonville families ask

What does a birth doula do?

A birth doula provides continuous emotional, physical, and informational support to a pregnant person and their partner before, during, and shortly after labor. Hannah Ghidey of Nurture Your Habits is a certified birth doula based in Jacksonville, Florida. She is not a medical provider; she works alongside your OB, midwife, and hospital staff to keep you grounded and informed at every step.

When should I hire a doula in Jacksonville?

Most Jacksonville families hire Hannah during the second trimester (weeks 14 to 27), which gives time for two prenatal visits, birth planning, and partner preparation. She also accepts third-trimester clients and occasional last-minute requests when her calendar allows. The earliest step is a free 20 to 30 minute consultation through nurtureyourhabits.com/contact.

What is the difference between a doula and a midwife?

A midwife is a licensed medical provider who delivers babies, performs cervical checks, and monitors fetal heart rates. A birth doula is a trained non-medical support person. Hannah provides comfort measures, emotional support, evidence-based information, and continuous presence through labor. She works alongside your midwife or OB, never in place of them. Most Jacksonville families have both a medical provider and a doula because the two roles complement each other.

What is the difference between a birth doula and a postpartum doula?

A birth doula supports pregnancy, labor, and the first couple of weeks after birth. A postpartum doula focuses on the weeks and months after baby arrives, helping with infant care, sleep, recovery, and household rhythms. Hannah is a birth doula. The Birth Doula Package includes one postpartum visit to debrief the birth and check on early recovery, but extended overnight postpartum care is outside her scope.

Which Jacksonville hospitals and birth settings does Hannah support?

Hannah supports families in three birth settings: Jacksonville-area hospitals, free-standing birth centers, and home births. Birth doulas in Florida are not credentialed at specific hospitals — Hannah accompanies you to whichever facility you and your provider have chosen, including all major Jacksonville hospital systems.

Does Hannah support epidural, induction, planned cesarean, and VBAC births?

Yes. Hannah supports unmedicated and medicated births, scheduled and unplanned inductions, planned and unplanned cesareans, and VBACs (vaginal birth after cesarean). Her role is to support the birth you want, not to push a specific birth philosophy.

How much does a birth doula in Jacksonville cost?

Nurture Your Habits offers a free 20 to 30 minute consultation with no obligation. Birth Doula Package pricing is shared during that call and on request, and payment plans are available. The package includes two prenatal visits, continuous labor support, one postpartum visit, and 24/7 on-call availability from 38 to 42 weeks.

Will insurance or Florida Medicaid cover doula services?

Coverage is changing. Some private insurance plans and HSA or FSA accounts cover doula services, and Florida Medicaid has been expanding doula coverage as of 2024. Coverage varies plan by plan, so the practical answer is to call the member services number on your card and ask whether birth doula support is a covered benefit. Hannah can provide a superbill that some plans accept for reimbursement.

Where in Northeast Florida does Hannah serve?

Hannah travels in person throughout Duval, Clay, St. Johns, and Nassau counties. This includes Jacksonville, Jacksonville Beach, Orange Park, Mandarin, Fleming Island, Ponte Vedra, Nocatee, St. Augustine, and Fernandina Beach. Families anywhere in the United States can also use the Mom to Emotion Digital Pregnancy Planner.

Is it too late to hire a doula in my third trimester?

Often no. Most families reach out in the second trimester, but Hannah does take third-trimester clients when her calendar allows, including occasional last-minute requests in the weeks before a due date. The honest answer depends on her availability around your due window. The fastest way to find out is to book a free consultation.

How do I know if I need a doula?

Families who get the most from working with Hannah usually want a calm, informed birth experience, want their partner to feel supported instead of overwhelmed, value continuous presence during labor over shift-change hospital staff, and want someone in their corner who is independent of the hospital. If any of that describes what you are looking for, a free consultation is the lowest-pressure way to find out.

Are doulas worth the cost? What does the research show?

The 2017 Cochrane review of 26 trials and over 15,000 women is the most cited research on continuous labor support. It found that people supported by a doula were more likely to have a spontaneous vaginal birth, less likely to have a cesarean or instrumental delivery, less likely to need pain medication, had shorter labors, and reported higher satisfaction with their birth experience. Most of Hannah's clients say the support was one of the best investments they made.
